Traditional Thai Massage

This treatment uses techniques drawn from ‘Nuad Thai’ – roughly translated as ‘Thai Yoga’. The massage focuses on specific pressure points and also employs some gentle stretching. Tee Shirt and Track Suit bottoms or shorts to be worn during the massage. No oil is used in this treatment.

If you prefer a ‘stationary’ and more relaxing treatment we recommend a Thai Aromatherapy massage, or alternatively we can adapt the traditional massage to use simpler stretches, which we can carry out on a table – feel free to discuss with us what you would like!

Traditional Thai Massage is an ancient technique with roots in Yoga, Ayurvedic medicine and Buddhist practice. This unique and complete system of Yoga therapy combines rhythmic massage, acupressure, gentle twisting, deep stretching and meditation. Thai Massage helps release tension, increase vitality and create wholeness of mind, body and spirit. A good Thai Massage is deep, stimulating and invigorating, or a wonderful form of relaxation. Our masseuses use their hands, elbows, knees and feet to apply the appropriate pressure, as well as gentle stretching positions. Why not treat yourself today?

Thai Deep Tissue Massage

Contrary to popular fears, a good Thai deep tissue massage should not be painful! The pace of massage is slow, and pressure is introduced slowly and with care. Muscles are warmed up and only areas that need it receive deeper pressure. Deeper tissue massage can penetrate muscle fibres that have been contorted and strained through strenuous or applied pressures and manipulate them intensively enough to provide relief. It is the quickest way to deal with muscular tension, and relief can be instant.

Thai deep tissue massage can offer effective relief for chronically tense and contracted areas such as stiff necks, lower back tightness, and sore shoulders as well as other muscle pain, spasm and stiffness. A common misconception is that deep tissue massage is intended exclusively for active sportsmen and women or fitness enthusiasts, but in reality, the treatment can be applied to alleviate the strains that are placed upon our bodies on a daily basis: sitting at a desk or even standing in poorly fitting shoes can subject the muscles to severe pressure.

We usually include some classic Thai massage techniques to other areas of the body to aid the relaxation process. Thai deep tissue massage is excellent for relaxing and loosening tight muscles, tissues and stiff joints where deeper work is required. Benefits include improved circulation, balance, posture and flexibility. It can help ease stress, muscle fatigue and release “knots”. The relaxation benefits in turn help improve quality of sleep.

The same pressure points (and some of the same strokes) are used as classic Thai massage therapy but the movement is slower and the pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension and pain. The techniques used in Thai deep tissue massage usually involve the therapist using her forearms and knuckles as well as her fingers, and using her body weight to apply deeper pressure. A succession of slow, deliberate and focused movements helps to relax these constricted areas of muscle. It is this concentrated pressure that alleviates pain and helps to restore a normal range of motion.

Due to the nature of deep tissue massage it is not unusual to feel a little soreness in the days immediately subsequent to the treatment and slight soreness for up to 48 hours after treatment but within a few days of treatment you will feel freer, more flexible and more content.

Aroma Therapy Massage

This is a blissful full-body oil massage focused on pure relaxation. It is a full-body treatment that combines the soothing and physiological power of massage with the therapeutic and mood-lifting qualities of aromatic essential oils. Each essential oil is extracted from a particular plant or bark and each has its own unique properties which can affect you – relaxing or invigorating you as required – both by absorption through your skin as well as inhalation.

So all you need to do is lie back, take in the aromas of the oil and drift away as muscle pain, tension, stress and anxiety all melt away. At the end of your massage, the oil will be removed by the masseuse using warm towels and you will feel rejuvenated and refreshed.

We use several blends of massage oil, each of which is hand-blended by our trained aromatherapist. If you prefer we can also use odourless oil if you want the relaxing massage experience without the aroma! The masseuse will use her fingers, palms and forearms to gently apply the appropriate pressure to muscles and pressure points. The pressure is enough to work out muscle tension, deeper layers of muscle are not targeted, as in a deep tissue massage.

How does aromatherapy work?

Aromatherapy, often considered a new-age alternative therapy, has actually been employed as a healing practice in Europe since the 12th century. The treatment is founded upon the inherent properties of natural aromatic plant compounds as a cognitive and physiological stimulus. These compounds are developed into essential oils which are absorbed through the skin.

The term aromatherapy was coined in the 1920’s by French professor and chemist Rene-Maurice Gattefosse. While working, Gattefosse accidentally burnt his hand and unthinkingly submerged it in lavender oil to ease the pain. Following a swift recovery, he observed that the lavender had assisted the healing and also had prevented scaring. He went on to use essential oils in his treatment of wounded soldiers during World War I before publishing his work and so the modern incarnation of aromatherapy was born.

Even older evidence suggests that the ancient Egyptians also used plant extracts for traditional ceremonies. It is believed they chose certain plant extracts for their antiseptic and antibacterial qualities. The Greeks and the Persians also used plant extracts but discovered that they could heighten the efficacy of the oils by combining them with massage.

Head, Neck and Shoulder Massage

Most people suffer from tension in their necks and shoulders at some time in their lives, which is hardly surprising if you consider the job the neck has to do. Poor posture, bad working positions, and carrying heavy bags all conspire to make the problem worse.

However, you can ease the pain with a remedy literally at our fingertips!

Using firm pressure, soothing strokes and stretches to the back, neck and shoulder area, a massage session can help reduce tension and free you of minor aches.

This massage is designed to concentrate on tension built up in the muscles of the back, neck and shoulders, so the benefits can be achieved in a shorter period of time.

Using pressure points and stretches to target the source of the pain you will notice the difference from the first treatment. It’s incredible how much lighter you feel after this massage, especially if you suffer from frequent neck pain.

Foot Massage

Rushed off your feet? Why not give them some pampering with our refreshing foot massage. Although we only work on your feet and lower legs, where our therapists apply gentle pressure to the reflex points in your feet, this treatment eases tension in your whole body.

Foot massage has been practised for centuries in many cultures, promoting health and well-being. Traditional Asian culture linked different parts of the body to different reflexology points in the feet – connecting, for example, the eyes to the second and third toes. The idea was that if you were suffering with, for example, a liver problem, it could be helped by massaging the inner side of the left foot. Today however, the practice involves applying pressure to all of the traditional reflexology points in the feet and lower legs. These points run along the so-called ‘sen’ energy lines (analogous to the ‘meridians’ in Chinese medicine).

Our foot massage is perfect for tired, aching or swollen feet, and while we can’t promise miraculous cures, we can promise a relaxing experience. And it won’t just be your feet reaping the benefits, many clients leave feeling completely relaxed and refreshed.

Four Hands Massage

The four hands massage is a deep-relaxation massage performed by two therapists simultaneously. Essentially you experience two full body massages at the same time.

If you really want to be pampered then this may be the treatment for you!In our four hands massage treatment, two masseuses will choreograph slow, detailed moves of varying paces and pressures. It is, of course, more expensive since two therapists perform it simultaneously.

Why consider a four-hands massage?

When two therapists and four hands hit your body, your mind reacts differently. It can be hard to keep track of where each therapist is and what each is doing, so it is very easy to ‘let go’ and relax thoroughly.

Four hands really does equate to double the relaxation!
